Harry J. Herbel, 86, of Herington, died Tuesday, April 14th, 2015, at the Herington Municipal Hospital. He was born on July 9, 1928, at Herington, Kansas, son of Fred and Anna L. (Sauer) Herbel.
Funeral service will be 2:00PM, Monday, April 20th, 2015, at the St. Mark Chapel, Walnut & B St., Herington, with Rev. Lorenzo Jackson, officiating. Military committal will follow at the Sunset Hill Cemetery, Herington. The family will receive friends Monday from 1pm until 2pm at the St. Mark Chapel, Walnut & B St., Herington.
Mr. Herbel owned and operated Surplus City of Herington until he retired
in November of 2013. Other businesses he operated were Family Wholesale in Hope, Surplus Outlet locations in Eskridge, Junction City, Council Grove, 3 J’s, Red Top, Salvage Yard, and many home rentals in Herington. He enjoyed listening to old time church hymns and church services. He is a Korean War Veteran and attended Herington schools.
He was married to Joyce DeBus on Aug. 23, 1959, at the Church of God, and she preceded in death on Feb. 25, 1986. He married Patsy Miller, May 15, 1955, and she preceded in death in (1958). He was also preceded in death by a son Fred Herbel (1985), two grandchildren David Wesley Caselman, Sara Ann Brown, a brother Charles Herbel, two sisters Marie Cameron, Irene “Hon” Castleberry, and his parents.
Survived by a son Jerry Herbel (wife-Cindy) of Mesa, AZ, three (3) daughters; Jane Brown of Hillsboro, Jeannie Jo Caselman (husband-Wade) of Salina, and Julia Gartrell of El Cajon, CA, a sister Virginia Phelps, Herington, 8 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.
The family requests memorials, in lieu of flowers to the Hospice of Dickinson County; and may be sent in care of the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home & Crematory, Herington Chapel, 404 S. Broadway, Herington, KS, 67449-3038.
