Alfred J. Sondergard, 91, lifelong resident of Ramona, died Sunday, July 13th, 2014, at the Medicalodges of Herington. He was born at Ramona, on Monday, November 6th, 1922, the son of Niels M and Lena M (Wilson) Sondergard.
Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, July 17th, 2014, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Ramona, with Rev. Clark Davis, and assisted by Pastor Bill Peterson. Burial will follow at the Lewis Cemetery, Ramona, with military honors. The family received friends Wednesday evening, July 16th, from 7pm until 8pm at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel.
Mr. Sondergard was a retired mechanic. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Ramona; and held every office in the church. He was sexton of the Lewis Cemetery, served on the Ramona City Council for over 30 years, served on the Ramona School Board, and was a mechanic for Centre School District. He graduated from Ramona High School with the class of 1940. Served in the U.S. Navy during WW II.
He married Darlene F. Helbach, on September 6, 1942, at her parent home in Ramona; she survives of the home. Also survived by three (3) daughters: Karen Ehrlich (husband-Bob) of Marion, Marilyn Peterson (husband-Jim) of Burdick, and Kaye Risser (companion-Lyle Cirkel) of Tecumseh, OK; seven (7) grandchildren; and seven (7) great grandchildren.
He was the last of nine (9) brothers (Norman, Gailord, Walter, Duane, and 4 brothers died in infancy). He is also preceded in death by a grandson Brian Pagenkopf in 2002.
