Winfred “Fred” Nely, 86, of Herington, died Friday, March 21st, 2014, at Sterling House of Salina. He was born on a farm south of Elmo on Thursday, July 7th, 1927, the son of Otto and Rachel (Schubert) Nely.
Funeral Service will be held Tuesday afternoon, March 25th, 2014, at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel, with Rev. Bill Peterson officiating. The following will serve as pallbearers Trae Gilbert, Jeremy Nely,
Nathan Nely, Adrian Serene, Dallas Smith, and Tom Thall. Burial will follow at the Sunset Hill Cemetery, Herington. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1pm until 2pm at the funeral home.
Mr. Nely worked for Greeley Gas Company as a Construction Superintendent for many years until he retired in 1990. He was a past member of the First Presbyterian Church in Herington, until its closing. He loved to hunt and fish; and just being outdoors, enjoying nature.
He married Betty B. DeBus, at Wichita on February 3, 1949; she survives. He is also by his son David Nely (wife-Regina) of Salina, his daughter Melody Gilbert (husband-Forest) of Culver, 4 grandchildren (Jeremy & Elizabeth Nely, Nathan & Becca Nely, Adrian & Anna Serene, Laura & Dallas Smith), 5 step grandchildren (Lisa Gropp, Tom Thall, Forest III “Trae” & Tiffany Gilbert, Alyssa Gilbert, Courtney Gilbert), 5 great grandchildren (Aaron Nely, Jackson Nely, Madeline Serene, Isabelle Nely, Alexander Nely), and 4 step great grandchildren (Eternity Murray, Derek Gropp, Carter Gilbert, Christopher Gropp).
Preceded in death by two (2)sisters: Leah Cheever & Helen Miller, an infant brother Harvey Nely, and his parents.
