OBITUARY for – Coach Burdette “Bud” Peterson, 61
Coach Burdette E. “Bud” Peterson, 61, of Burdick, died Friday, September 9th, 2011, at the Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born on November 9, 1949, at Herington, the son of Wendell E. and Mary Deane (Burns) Peterson.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00am Wednesday, September 14th, 2011, at the Centre High School Auditorium, Lost Springs, with his brother Pastor Bill Peterson officiating; burial will follow at the Hebron Lutheran Cemetery, Burdick. Musician for the service is Judy Peterson and serving as casketbearers are Bret Beye, Glenn Carlson, Cuyler Cowart, Eric Peterson, Scott Peterson, Cesar Salazar, Ron Schrader, and Stan Wiles. Friends may call at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel, Tuesday from 2pm until 6pm; and the family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7pm until 8:30pm at the Hebron Lutheran Church, Burdick.
Coach Peterson was currently coaching the Herington High School Football Team. He was a member of the Hebron Lutheran Church, Burdick, and served on numerous church boards; and on the Burdick Council of Clubs, sang with the choir. He was currently serving on the Centre School Board. In 1997 the Centre High School, Cougar 8man football team, won the state championship; and Coach Peterson received the Coach of the Year. In 2005 Coach Peterson was chosen for Division One Athletic Director of the Year for the State of Kansas. He began coaching at Norwich High School, then Remington High School at White Water, followed by Kingman High School, and then most of his coaching career at Centre High School until he retired. He also coached at Council Grove High School, and finally at Herington High School. He not only coached Football, but Track & Field, and Girls Basketball. He was a member of the Kansas Athletics Association.
He graduated from Centre High School with the class of 1967. Received his Bachelors’ Degree in Education from Bethany College in 1971, and received his Masters Degree from Wichita State University.
He married Maureen F. Riffel on January 17, 1970, at the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lincolnville; she survives of the home. Also survived by three (3) daughters: Lisa Beye (husband-Bret) of Herington, Jenny Schrader (husband-Ron) of Wichita, Kelli Salazar (husband-Cesar) of Derby; two (2) brothers: Pastor Bill Peterson (wife-Judy) of Herington, and Marvin Peterson of Lincolnville; and eight (8) grandchildren (Samantha & Elizabeth Beye, Cuyler & Chelsea Cowart, Shae & Hunter Schrader, Rigo & Mario Salazar).
He is preceded in death by his parents (Wendell-2006 & Mary Deane-2010).
